I have been listening to a podcast called Not Your Average Runner. It has great tips for not only running, but life skills to live your best life. One episode mention having a goal to epicly fail. It has really stuck with me. How many times do I quit or never even start because I am afraid of failing? Too many to count. So, why not make a goal to fail epicly? To go so far out of your comfort zone that failing would still be an accomplishment. To get used to failing. To stop being afraid.
The truth is even the most successful people failed on their way up. More importantly, they continue to fail. Failing is the only way to learn and grow. If you are never failing, you are never getting out of your comfort zone or growing as a person. Albert Einstein said, “Failure is success in progress.”
Why are we so afraid to fail? I would say that most of it comes from being afraid of what others will think. For example, you train for a marathon and tell all your friends about it. You train for a few months, become able to do many miles, but lose your motivation. How embarrassing, right? This is a common misconception. First, your friends don’t really spend a lot of time thinking about your failures (unless you keep reminding them). Secondly, who cares? Why does it matter so much? The embarrassment is just in our head. And most importantly, you are now able to run more than you were when you started. Same goes for any endeavor. You learn something in the process of failure. You learn more about yourself and what motivates you (and what doesn’t). You learn valuable tools and skills.
Failing epicly can create extraordinary change. Don’t just make goals. Make goals so epic that just attempting them is extraordinary. Quit being afraid to fail and get out there and live life fully.
